17.03.1915: Hero’s graves

Military mail sent by Franz Mack to his parents showing a picture of  Essey-et-Maizerais from 17.03.1915:

Dear loved ones!

With great pleasure I received package No 8 today. Such a piece of Presssack is a real delicacy around here. Didn’t tell brother-in-law Karl about my furlough yet. My long-serving comrads are getting furlough now. You can find hero’s graves like that very often right now. Sometimes they are located in a forest and paint a moving picture.

At the moment we’re enjoying the best spring weather here.

Hope to see you again

Franz

“In the daytime the french attacked us several times without any success in the Champagne area west of Perthes and north of Le Mesnil. In the evening hours they attacked again north of Le Mesnil with greater force. This fight ist still ongoing.”
